file association error office 2010?

When trying to open Office I get an error saying that the file does not have a program associated. Having tried to find .exe in the protocol list (big suprise!) it's not there. When trying to open a file, I get an error about side-by-side configuration. Any ideas? I have tried a command of "sfc /scannow" (which according to google would sort it) but no luck.
