Firefox and Internet Explorer background images missing?

Im trying to get my grandmas computer working properly, for some reason in firefox and IE there are a lot of images missing and some text art is distorted to be unreadable. Examples would be in firefox the home page is google, the colorful GOOGLE image doesnt show. In facebook, the majority of the blue borders and text images are missing, multiple buttons are invisible. On most other web pages the page is 95% white excluding text and 1 pixel wide borders. The system is an HP, with windows XP home. I have redownloaded and installed both Firefox and IE but got no better results. If any of you know more than me on what this could be please let me know it would be greatly appreciated to get your help. Thanks
 
Check to see if you have adobe flash player. Then get java as well. Next get antivirus and run a scan to be sure. Some good free antiviruses are avg, avira and avast. Run a scan. That should help out. Also check your internet settings.
