Has anyone had any luck catching stocked trout in streams in the Appalachians when the water is a bit murky? If so, what kind of bait seemed to work? With the rain last night and this morning, I'm wondering if I should be planning on looking for other species of fish Saturday morning. Your answers will be even better if you've fished in WV.
Also, I'm talking about conventional rod and reel, not fly fishing. I've never fly fished, but plan to start learning how soon.
Jil - typically we use salmon eggs to catch trout here, our trout are stocked since the ph and water temperature aren't quite right for trout to reproduce in WV. Corn works well too, since it looks like a fish egg. I would LOVE to fish in the Oregon area though!
The problem is the possibility of the murky water, it changes things, and I've had terrible luck with weather conditions this year.
And there has only been one confirmed case of a one eyed trouser trout in my neighborhood, and it is a WHOPPER!
Jen - I'd take you fishing. For some fish, you can be as loud as you want without bothing them. As loud as you want...

Unfortunately, trout are not one of those fish.
Rhythmatist - sounds like you've been all around here. I'll likely either be heading to Paint Creek in Kanawha County or the tailwaters of Beech Fork lake.

Sorry Adam..I only know how to fish for salmon and steelhead here. Sorry for your lots.. I hope you find out though. One eyed trouser trout is quite popular in your neck of the woods I hear.

EDIT: HA HA HA..Jen.. I have been told the same thing! WTH? No one asks me anymore either!

in the rainy weather, use an earthworm lightly hooked on a size 6 or 8 hook and just enough splitshot so it will drift naturally in the creek. the fish will be on the lookout for any tasty tid-bits being washed into the water. especially worms. just keep a natural presentation.

Well, I really can't help you much. I know how to catch Bass, Bream, Crappie and Catfish. Well, I kind of know. I do go fishing sometimes. But, usually somebody else baits my hook and takes the fish off for me. Soooooo, I guess I am not the best fisherman in the world. I am good company though! Unless you need it to be quiet. I do tend to talk alot when I am trying to fish...............Now that I think of it. No one asks me to go fishing much.......................

Adam and Jili: Ya'll make me laugh! I know the people at work think I'm stupid over here laughing to myself.
