Get improperly stored bike re-running?

I got a bike just before the winter, I didn't know much about motorcycles at that point and left gas and oil in the bike all winter long without being ridden. It's a Yamaha FZR 600 '94. Since getting the bike I have taken a riding course and read up on proper care. But I still have the problem of an improperly stored bike. When I try to start the bike it coughs and almost catches but doesn't quite catch. I believe the gas has gone bad and is perhaps clogging the lines. What steps should be taken? How do I drain the gas? Any suggestions would be awesome!
