good looking, good, cheap, used suvs?

alright so i just spent like 3 hours looking all over this site and the internet looking for an suv. i get my permit in 2 months and am going to get a job and save up for about a year. i did the math and can make at least $4000. my mom said she will put aside $1000 for me and see what she can get out of my aunt (probably $1000 but im not counting on it) so the real question is, what kind of used suv can i get for about $5000 that is good and doesn't look bad with not that bad mileage on it?
 
For the rugged look I like the Nissan Xterra. Probably not going to find one in your price range but you can work on mom for that angle.

For the cute, street look there is no better SUV then the Honda CR-V. Small enough to be practical and economical but big enough to get your friend and your gear in the back for a trip to the beach.

For the budget minded you can't beat the Ford Explorer. They sold millions of them so they are everywhere and they are inexpensive.

Others to consider, Ford Escape, older model Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mitsubishi Montero Sport, KIA Sorrento and Hyundai Santa Fe.
 
nissan xterra or nissan frontier are the best value. they are very well made and very inexpensive. Good reviews and very reliable. Not to mention cheap to insure in comparison. you could find a 4x4 xterra with 90-120k miles for 5-7 grand all day long or even less if you look hard enough
