Good onion ring recipe please?

Hi, I would like to make onion rings, the type that have almost a thinish coating that is pretty soft, like the type that isnt glued onto the onion ring, and its easy to pull out the sliver of onion, if that makes sense.

It could be puffy and soft like a tempura, either way. I dont have any beer for a batter, and I do have buttermilk powder, but the container was opened over a year ago and do not know if its still good or not, it looks ok. I also do not have any panko or cracker meal etc. So the batter will have to be pretty simple.
I watched the food channel and on one of their diner drives and dives had what looked like exactly I was hoping for, unfortunately they did not have the onion ring recipe I had just seen.
Thank you all so much, a recipe, link to a direct page, would be so appriciated. I can certainly search recipies myself, but since I am looking for a specific texture, recipes usually always just say crunchy, and thats not really what I am looking for.

Ive used this recipe for 30years.. my kids love onionrings..

Ingredients
3/4cupall-purpose flour
2/3cupmilk
1 egg
1tablespooncooking oil
1/4teaspoonsalt
Cooking oil or shortening for deep-fat frying
4 medium mild yellow or white onions, sliced 1/4 inch thick and separated into rings
Salt

For batter, in a medium mixing bowl combine flour, milk, egg, the 1 tablespoon oil, and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Using a rotary beater, beat just until smooth.

2. In a deep-fat fryer or large deep skillet heat 1 inch oil to 365 degrees F. Using a fork, dip onion rings into batter; drain off excess batter. Fry onion rings, a few at a time, in a single layer in hot oil for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden, stirring once or twice with a fork to separate rings. Remove rings from oil; drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with additional salt.

3. Makes 6 appetizer servings
