GPS --- Garmin or TomTom?

I'm in need of a GPS system because I'm new to driving and don't know my way around. With that said, I'm in the market for a GPS [obviously] but I've read and heard mixed reviews of the Garmin and TomTom devices. From the countless reviews that I've read, Garmin is the superior device, because by many accounts, TomTom's updates and maps are terrible. What are your experiences with these two brands?

well, i've got a tomtom 720 go and i got to say it's brilliant, the updates are spot on and it spots all speed cameras and gives subscribed traffic reports plus the tomtom is very easy to use!

i had to drive from wales to london and it spotted all the cameras! did'nt miss one! even the ones they moved because of motorway work!

i cant give an opinion for the garmin devices as i've never had one but i would stick to what you know is best - [tomtom] lol
