GPS navigation handheld?

I'm looking into FINALLY getting one, but in researching the different kinds out there, a lot of them say "anywhere in the US". what about internationally? I'm taking a trip to Italy this Spring and it'd be nice to use it there.
Is there any GPS's that are usable internationally? are they a lot more expensive?
