You were walking towards eachother, and made eye contact for a second and she smiled at you?
If it were a girl you didn't know, NOT a friend or acquaintance.

I mean they could potentially see that you might think they are attractive, but it wont set them off
If you start talking to him, and getting to know him more, that would be the only way really

eye contact and a smile is always helpful sometimes you gotta make it apparent us guys don't always pay attention but i personally always check to see if they look back after they passed you if im worth turning your head around for i might have a better chance of not making a fool of myself maybe an occasional glance in they re direction without staring ...staring is creepy but hey it might work if someone like me doesn't get the hint but i definitely need the look back if your just passing by myself

Could mean two things ... First , since you were looking at her with a kind of look that you know better .. she could have smiled , meaning it is OK I can see your mouth watering ... Or could be a courtesy smile ... OR ... yes she could have found you attractive and worth making an acquaintance

A smile is nice. Don't read anymore into it than what it simply is ... a smile. Many people do it while passing. I do it often and don't mean anything by it.

Of course, I never smile at hideous or ugly people.

From a girl, I'd take it as a nice gesture or compliment that you're not hideous. Nothing more.
