When a religion is new and full of zeal and zest, no clergy is needed. Every believer seriously learns the religion and practices it to the content of his/her heart, or can approach the prophet of his/her age to clarify anything. When the religion becomes old and loses all excitement and energy, intermediaries come in between God and humans, requiring them to pay hefty amounts for their upkeep and bow before them for pardoning their sins. Apart from making life more difficult for the ordinary believers, they hardly serve any purpose.
These priests, rabbis and maulvis, hardly think independently and try to seek the desired goal for which a commandment has been given, but their total attention is on the outer form, instead of internal meaning.
But the greatest sin they commit, is to change the law for small sums of money, to appease the moneyed people. For example making usury and same sex marriage permissible are totally illegal. But there are clerics who support such acts for their ulterior motives.
Do you think, under the circumstances, people would do well to unanimously say good bye to the institutions of padrees, rabbis and mualvis and develop their own understanding of their religions.
