HELP, does it cost to text people with verizon off gmail (using vtext.com)?

i've been texting my friends using gmail since last August (I don't have texting) and JUST got a bill (half a year later) for all the texts i've sent and recieved since then.
Is this real, do I have to pay and why wasn't i notified sooner??

Any information on this subject would be helpful.
