help! rtl8187b drivers on ubuntu 8.01?!?

the pc does NOT have inet access (but i can transfer manually via a usb flashdrive) and IDEALLY id like to avoid ndiswrapper. im dualbooted with xp/ubuntu 8.01.. i have downloaded a few tar.gz's with supposedly compliant drivers.. but how do i load em up? the readmes are poorly documented/non existant. has anyone out there successfully loaded a belkin wireless g usb adapter (chipset RTL8187B) to ubuntu hardy heron 8.01??
