Help with 3rd party applications on google android (Motorola Cliq)?

I'm trying to download some 3rd party apps. So far i have downloaded them to my laptop, copied the file, and pasted it to my SD card. Once i Open Apps Installer on my cliq it says no apps have been found? and yes i do have the box checked where i am allowed to download 3rd party apps. please help :)
