Help with a wordless story?

Ok, so I have a project due for a visual books class.The thing is, I am using pictures, and in order to do it right, I have to "alter" them so they don't look like a photo album. The two problems I have is, are there any suggestions on how to make a wordless story with family, because that is all the pictures I have. And two, how do I alter them? I planned on scanning them and altering them on some type of MAC program or printing them out and drawing on them. But I have no idea where to begin. Someone please help!
 
You should ask this question in the Visual Arts or Photography section; we the people of B&A may be decent writers; but not all of us know how to do things like that.
