Helping a sore/lame horse?

So..... my friend owns an ex-racehorse named Reddi.
Before she got him, he had fractured his leg in a race and had a pin put in.
Because of the pin, he requires front shoes every 6 weeks.
He is sore occasionally. But mostly nothing that he cant work out of on the lunge line before riding.
Last month he became so sore on his back that when his owner, McKenzie, got on him, he buckled but never fell. He regained balance but McKenzie got off him right away. That was also the time she noticed him losing hair where the front on her saddle sits.
Also, he had not been shod in 3 months. McKenzie therefore believed it was due to him not being shod. I, however, thought it was a combination of him being 100-200 lbs. underweight, his saddle not fitting, and him not being shod. But now that he hasn't had a saddle on in a month, I am at a total loss. I have NO CLUE as to what could be causing it. She still refuses to think it is not the saddle because she has not put a saddle on him in a month and she only put weight on him to find out if he is still sore.(with her hands or laying across his body and being on a step stool to control how much weight is on him) I don't know what to believe and I told her I would try and find out what it is.
I know that none of you have seen him or laid hands on him, but from what information I gave, what do you think it could be? And what could we do to possibly solve it? I do own some liniment wipey-things....(if that would help at all, lol)
Thanks in advance!
