honda civic performance tuning?

I asked recently, what i could do to my 92 civic EX to get a little more of a boost...i'm planning on doing intake, exhaust, header, ect. LATER..for now, i want to know what SMALLER things i could do, like simple adjustments...or inexpensive mods that would help...I want to LEARN...I really don't want to buy an ecu, it's just a cheap piece of plastic, that will make your car run rich...so does anyone have any ideas?
Well, i mean, not the garbage they sell on ebay -Idk, i would never put that on my car...nor would i put "nos" on my car even if it was the only mod left, and i'm aware that mods get more expensive than intake, and exhuast, i'm really not stupid, i'm just trying to learn more about my motor and what it's fully capable of with out mods unlike your every day ricer......Some people, can be real smart a**es....

And Jon, thank you for answering my question correctly.

take all the crap / weight out that you don't need...
replace spare wheel with fix-a-flat and AAA card,
foot mats, trunk carpet and sound deadening, any stuff you are carrying around.
I managed to get rid of 100+lbs off my car like that.
maybe you can get 5% weight off.... car is 5% faster

also Tires are the biggest/best mod for a car. get sticky tires. It might not go faster... but it will stop and turn faster, and maybe not wheel spin as much at launch.

You could adjust wheel camber (lean) to give you better turn-in on corners.

You could get stiffer shocks and spring, and lowering springs at the same time.. might be a more uncomfortable ride, but car looks better, and handles better.

Wet nitrous kit. Get a small shot nitrous kit installed. It will provide LOADS of torque and proper fuel addition.
In my opinion, turbo kits are too expensive and too much to worry about.
Don't forget to upgrade your clutch too, nothing too extreme.

if you think the ECU is just a cheap piece of plastic that will make your car run rich, you've got a few things to learn. Intake, exhaust, etc ARE the cheap, "small" modifications. The only other inexpensive mod to get some better performance is to rip all excess weight out of the car.

If you think that the intake/exhaust are big, expensive modifications, you're going to crap your pants if you ever start getting into building high-performance motors or putting turbo systems on your Civic.

If you put nitrous oxide on a stock motor, you'll blow it up.
