Hello all, I'm not in the U.S. but thought I could get an insite on this from the anwers I could get.
I recently started riding (since Dec. 08) and Although I was going to go for a Honda Rebel, which seems to be the wrold’s favourite beginner bike, I opted for a shadow, for two reasons.
1.Financial, I wasn’t sure how long I’ll stick to riding but now I’m addicted
2.As a beginner I heard I’m inevitably going to drop the bike, and didn’t want to drop a $15,000 Harley across the Dubai Highway (Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates by the way).
My question is, is it insase to consider joining a group of riders of which all happen to own Harleys. Are Harley owners receptive to non harley owning members?.. now too many shadows in town, or any other cruisers for that matter. It’s a harley town, and I hate it. (not a big harley fan)

Harley Davidson Riders, its all about image and pride
They ride to show off their bikes, they think the general public will stop and stare at them thinking "Wow, I wish I could own a Harley" Oh Wow, what a nice bike"
They are showing off,
Notice what they look at when they ride their Harley, they don't look at the road, they look at the people watching them.

Your Honda Shadow is a nice bike, but that bike is a threat to Harley Riders, it will clash and ruin their bad boy image, the Honda is a better handling bike where it could out-accelerate and take the curves faster than a Harley, which may look the Harley Riders look bad.

There are 2 types of riders
The first type ride for their own enjoyment, the freedom, the wind in their face, the thrill of high speed and knowing your in control.
The second type ride to show off, they ride in public areas where a lot of people can see them, that's the majority of the HD Riders.

If you are not a big Harley fan don't try to hang out with the Harley guys. I'm sure there are some groups for riders of cheaper smaller Japanese bikes that try hard to look like Harleys. Just keep looking around.
