in the Philippines
they are known as instik, tsekwa, beho, kabise but now with more respect, chinoy.
having read in the Reader's Digest on how the spaniards called a South American Indian tribe, Yucatan, which means in the yucatan language, "I don't know" When asked if they can speak spanish.I came to think that the chinese words here may have the same connotation. Such as...
Intsik in cantonese means I don't know
tsekwa in cantonese means I know the language
beho in fookien means not good
kabise in fookien means you talk to him ( a businessman most likely summoning his staff to face the visitor)
the chinoy is a modern term meaning chinese filipinos
