How can I change the column names in Microsoft Excel 2007?

I'm going crazy! How can I change the names of the columns in Microsoft Excel? At present, across the top they are just "A," "B," "C," and so on, but I need to give them actual titles. Is there a way to do this? Some formatting trick or anything?

Help, please!
