How can i create a network connection? For file sharing?

I have a desktop and a laptop. The desktop is running windows Xp Home Edition while the laptop is running windows XP Professional. I have a wireless router. The desktop is connected to it by an Ethernet cord ( to one of the ports in the back of the router) and the Laptop is connected through wifi. ( i think that's the right term). How can i send files across to each other? and is it possible to enable printing sharing to? The desktop is connected to the printer.
