I have a 14 year old weiner dog. We recently in the last 3 years started to take her on hikes. After that, we noticed that she howls and cries non stop whenever we leave. Her hearing is very bad. She has trouble seeing. Her since of smell works great though. Whenever I leave the room witout her knowing, she'll sniff the floor until she finds me. We recently moved into a apartment and now the neighbors are complaining that she is howling and crying all the time. I try to take her everywhere with me, but there is some places that I can't take her. I don't like leaving her locked in the car with the windows cracked. I've tried to leave and listen outside the front door until I hear her starting to cry. I'll go back in and smack her with the newspaper, but she doesn't care and will start up once again after I leave. Please HELP!

Get a kong and fill it will kibble, peanut butter (small amounts), or anything else that is appropriate to keep them occupied. Maybe leaving the tv or radio on so that they can hear voices and not feel alone.

You could also do some training by getting some nummy treats and stepping out your door for a few seconds and coming back in. Do this again and again will increasing your time. If your dog barks/whines shorten your time and only treat when the dog is quiet.

Do not muzzel your dog when you are not at home. It is dangerous. Hitting your dog isnt going to help. Its going to show them that bad things happen when you leave not that bad things happen when I cry.
