How can I improve my cardio fitness?

I have a really poor cardio health, I can't run a mile without stopping. And i'm not out of shape, I just want to boost my cardio health so I can get used to working out intensely for volleyball next year. I want to know how I should start out with my workouts to start getting used to it. What types of exercises should I do and how many times should I do it? What kinds of foods should I avoid?
Also, which is the most effective way to shed a few pounds?
 
don't eat right before your workout (cus you'll get cramps)
keep water at hand
jog for as long as you can and take a 30 second water break when you've reached your limit


keep doing this and you'll be able to keep jogging for maybe 15-30 minutes and increase the speed as it becomes easier
