How can I make a backup of a movie playing on a DVD-only player, to a blank DVD on

a VHS/DVD Recorder? I have recorded VHS tapes on to DVD, with the VHS/DVD recorder. I would like to make backup copies of my DVD movies. The only way I can think to do it, is to run the audio/video/data cables from the DVD player, to the VHS/DVD recorder. If I can't record this way, how else can I do it?
