how can i make a voltage multiplier?

how do i know what capacitors and diodes i should use?
so if i want 10 kv my capasitors sould be 40 kv capasitors?
 
Your capacitors have to be at least 4 times the voltage that you expect to generate. Most of that is safety factor, but if a component fails, then everything may be subject to the full voltage of the multiplier. Diodes, same thing, they need to be able to withstand at least 4 times the expected final voltage. Your current should not be a real problem, so 1 amp diodes should be fine. The voltage to watch out for is the peak inverse voltage of the diode. Any decent schematic is going to specify what parts to use. A web search should provide you with the schematics that you need.
In respect to a voltage multiplier, you might want to consider the multiplier out of a TV set. Those devices are voltage triplers because the high voltage section only runs at about 4 ot 5,000 volts, instead of the 15.000 that the high voltage section used to have to develop without the use of a tripler.
