How can I make video footage stream live on the internet faster?

My H.S. does a LIVE video and audio broadcast of all of the sports at out school. Everybody loves it but the prob is that the video streams all choppy and slow. I need a way to make the video come in clear, but at the same time fast. Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to correct this and if possible keep the price on the low side. I currently use a Sony Vaio laptop, 4-4 pin firewire cable, and a panasonic studio camera.
