How come I can't get clean edges on green screen subjects in After Effects?

I've got well lit green screen and well lit subjects but when i go to AE and use either keying or color pick in effects/keying, I still get the edge around the subject I just can't get rid of. I've spent hours on this. I've tried using the video copilot tutorials as a guide doing exacdtlyl what he does but it doesn't get rid of the edge around the subject. What am I doing wrong? Please, only looking for folks WHO KNOW and understand this process, not guesses, I can guess myself. Thanks.
