how come my computer will recognize movie dv'd's but not my dvd-rw?

my computer recognized rockie balboa but when i put in a blank rewritable DVD or dvd-r it wont detect it on my computer. A little cd will icon will go where my mouse. I have windows Xp emachines please help me
