How dangerous is P2P software?

I love P2P software and it allows me to download all the full version games I can dream of!
Yet I heard rumors or facts that p2p software can fuck up my PC bad even if I have the best anti-virus and firewall is that true?

P2P programs are only dangerous, when the persons using them do not know what to download and what not to download.
There are a lot of fake files when doing a search. Fake files are viruses.
All those very small files you see are much too small to be a song, game or movie. It is very likely that those small files are the fake ( dummy) files
Make sure that your anti virus is up to date, just in cast a virus does slip throught. It will then take care of it.
