How did the North become Democratic and the South Republican?

It is a complete flip flop from the time of Lincoln. The South was Democratic and the North Republican. How did this happen? I know the religious card comes into play here.
 
because the North had more nutrition for it's youth and better education in the 1950s, which is why the South became conservative and the North liberal
