My basenji mix loves people and gets very excited when meeting people on walks and especially if someone comes in the house.

He does the basenji howl a lot, and I think it scares some people.

How did you train your dog to calmly meet new people?
Thanks for the ideas, I've already taken three training classes and try the techniques that I've learned there (when I come home he does a down-stay on his mat for attention)

get a friend or two to help you. make them ring the door bell and make your dog stay away from the door. make him stay seated away from the door meaning dont answer the door untill your pup is sitting calmly. if you go to open the door and hee gets up shut the door and go over to make him sit again. keep doing this untill you can open the door.
once you can open the door le your friend inside if he gets up to greet her or him make them go back outside without looking or talking to the dog and shut the door again and make him go back into the same position. this will probably take a good few hours so be prepared and make sure your friend is too!
keep this up untill your friend can come inside. once inside neither of you should look at the door or ackknowldge its presence. if he comes up to your friend calmly allow him too he will probably be a little wiggly with ears back. contunue to ignore him if he jumps up make him go back and sit down or if he gets over the top and barks make him go back and sit. if he refuses to sit with your friend inside teet him by the leash somewhere in view. and ignore him. if he barks or whines or jumps around ignore him. he will evetually stp trying to get your attention and once he does once he is calm walk up to him slowly and give him a treat then walk away. dont use verbal praise as this willm ake him excited again. or if while you are walking up to him he becomes excited turn around with your back to him untill he calms down. try doing this excersize whenever possable when people come into the house tell them to ignore him. on the street do not allow him to walk up to people while he is excited if your walking and someone is walking toward you if he becomes excited turn around and walk n the other direction. once he starts to calm down you can begin taking him up to people for attantion if he ever becomes excited during this just take him away from the situation untill he calms down then take him back. it takes alot of time and alot of repatitions that make look silly to other people but it will work

never did............ she just naturaly doesnt freak out... kinda.... she peed on my brother's friend once cuz she got so excited, but yeaaaaa... she just wants to tackle you and lick you to death :D oh, but it will calm down when it gets older... all dogs but beagles do
