How do I download iOS 6.1 on my iPOD 4g?

I have had my iPOD 4g for two years and I never updated the version. It is currently at 4.1. I tried installing the 6.1 over iTunes but it doesn't work it will say there's an error and turn off. Any ideas on how to download iOS 6.1? Thanks in advance!
 
I have a iPod4g also and when my iPod had to update I had to go into the settings and click general click software update then click update software
