How do I get rid of cigarette/urine smell from my apartment a/c?

We just moved in and the whole apartment was painted and the carpet was replaced, but it still smells like stale cigarette smoke and cat or dog pee! I'm sure it's coming from our a/c unit. The filter is also new. We've tried airing out the apartment but the smell always returns as soon as the a/c kicks on. My allergies are flaring up like crazy! What can I do to clean the a/c?
 
Open the windows and leave the a/c on for a long time.

You will have to pay a few extra dollars at the end of the month, but it should blow most of the smell out.
 
Not sure of cleaning it. Try putting a dryer sheet in all the vents
