How do I get to the thermostat in a 1994 Nissan 4WD Pickup (4 cylinder)?

I should add the I followed the top hose only to find no old thermostat. I know now, it is the bottom hose. I just don't see how to get to it. There's too much crap in the way.
 
follow the top radiator hose to where it connects to the engine, and there you shall see the light.......
