i'm considering going to college for english/journalism. and i really enjoy writing, and books, and poetry, etc., but how do I know if my writing is good enough? right now i'm in an ap language and composition class, and my essays this year so far were:
Narrative essay: 93%
Descriptive essay: 90%
Close Reading Analysis essay: 90%
Comparison & Contrast Essay: 100%

and i feel like i have a lot to say about certain aspects of the human condition, etc., i'm currently writing a research paper on how scientific advancement negatively impacts the psyche of the human population (as in it creates cynicism, loss of religion, depression, hopelessness, etc. In my opinion at least.)

but how do i figure out if i'm going to be able to go to college for english, and then succeed after college?

First of all, you're definitely going in the right direction if you're getting those grades. Even if you weren't getting good grades, the point of education to help you get there. No, you're probably not journalist material right now but school will get you there.

If you are REALLY concerned about getting that degree one day, then you need start by TALKING to your teachers. Your teachers have to deal with tons of underachieving students every day. When a student comes up to them expressing sincere interest in their subject, they really appreciate it. Tell your teacher what you're interested in doing and ask them what do you have to do to get to the point where you can really have a chance at getting into a decent college. Ask them what colleges they would recommend for you as well. Chances are that you will need letters of recommendation when applying to the colleges of your choice. Establishing better relationships with your teachers will help you to get those necessary letters of recommendation (and will probably result in better letters as well.)

I know this is just some question on Yahoo! Answers, but if you're serious about pursuing a future in writing, then you should make it a habit to use proper punctuation and grammar. Also, always double check when you aren't sure. I'm not saying this to be a "grammar nazi," I'm saying it because doing it will help you.

You can't get a definitive answer a to subjective question.

as for whether you'll be successful in college and afterwards, I can't read the future, but you should know that getting a job in writing is not an easy task. That being said, no one has ever gotten anywhere without taking risks. I'd go for it anyways.

I'm going to give you a straight forward answer. Good grades in high school don't make you a good writer - it means you have included the right material and have a good analysis.

If you major in English, your professor won't be looking at your essays going, "Oh, did she get the material right? Did she make a good point?" They're also looking for a thing called "prose". On the AP test, prose counts for NOTHING. All they want is to see that the essay is structured and the information is right.

Having a good prose is what makes you a good writer. Your sentence structure, your diction, etc. It's what makes you unique. I've read so many AP Language and AP Literature essays from students that think they're good writers, and they're not. They just spit out the information with no elegance or beauty behind the words.

In order to determine if you're a good writer, we'd need to see a sample. Considering the descriptive essay is one of your lowest scores, that's an indication that your prose needs work, as that essay is the one that would show your personal writing skill and style the most. From the looks of it right now, you seem to be a technical writer, which doesn't require the "writer gene". However, it still offers a promising career, and journalism would be more your style, as journalism is simplistic writing with tons of information.

I suggest uploading some samples of your writing to Wattpad.com or Figment.com
These are sites where writers can create a profile and get their work out there. Even if your pieces are short to begin with, you can get feedback from others writers.

Good luck and Happy writing!! :)
