My husband and I are considering purchasing a handheld GPS for our family this christmas. We plan to use it in our local mountains and hiking areas. We might be interested in taking the fam out for some geocashing as well... How do I know which one to buy?

Here's what I'd like:
East to use - something without too many features that will confuse me, and I will never use.
BUT... It needs to do a little more than have an arrow on the screen pointing me in the right direction.
What's with the "mapping" ones??? Does this software already come on the unit? Do I have to download it from a cd? The internet? Is there additional costs to this???
How can I use google earth to find locations I'd like to check out? Or, it this something that the mapping software would be better for?

Ultimately I'd like to look at a map, locate a site we'd like to scope out, and plug in the cords - then GO!

I'm sorry, one more question... If I plug in multiple locations will it create a little route, or "path" to travel... AND, does it recognize existing trails?

Is there even a piece of equipment that can do all this, or have I Truly been living in the dark ages???
As you can see we are clueless here - just need someone to point us in the right direction...
And above all - IT MUST BE EASY TO USE.
