How do i properly use the Steptronic in my bmw?

I've had my 2006 325i for about 3 weeks now and I'm trying to
take advantage of the Steptronic in my automatic.
I've never driven a manual at all, so if someone could please explain
when I would down shift and up shift?

I don't want to damage the car, so i would like to do it properly :)

It doesn't really matter you just have to shift up before you hit the red line, and shift down if your revs go below about 1500 RPM.
I wouldn't be too worried though I don't think it will let you damage the engine or the transmission.
