How do I send and receive Text messages using my Cell phone?

I use a Virgin Mobile Cellular telephone.
I have purchased a 1,000-message Text card as an added-feature to this telephone.

How am I to Send and Receive Texts using this cell phone? %If I can send Text-messages to friends living at a distance, do I need to pay long-distance fees to text them?
