How do I set up my home theatre system to work with my blu ray and PVR?

I have a Sony DVD Home theatre system and right now if I'm using the satellite or blu ray player the sound is half what it should me. I have the sound system hooked right up to the TV. Any way I can fix this, perhaps there is a better set up?
my home theatre doesn't seem to have optical audio in ports..
