How do ladies prefer to be greeted?

This one lady told me that she wasn't going to shake my hand because she was a lady (basically implying that it wasn't lady-like). In you opinion as a women: do you respond well to a hand shake?
 
Hmm, handshakes are almost awkward for me. For guys it's easy; be firm, keep eye contact, no fish hand. With girls, there's not really a proper way to give a handshake as far as I'm concerned. So I try to avoid them for a greeting as much as possible, BUT if handshakes are going around in front of me, I expect it. Say I'm in a business setting with five other guys and myself. You give all five of them a handshake, I would expect one too. So just avoid it for one-on-one casual greetings I guess, but business is different. Sorry if this didn't help any. :P
