How do the "compass" apps for Andoid and iphone cell phones work? Do they use GPS

How do the "compass" apps for Andoid and iphone cell phones work? Do they use GPS

for direction? Do the cell phones actually have an internal magnetic compass? If so, will the magnets in cell phone belt holsters hurt them? Do the holster magnets have any other ill affects on cell phones?
