How do they pick the celebs to have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame?

I live in Hollywood and Rod Stewart finally got his star two years ago after Briney Spears and many others that weren't alive when he was hot did..... so I don't get it either

The star nominee must be sponsored by a studio or record company. (It's a rumor that you can just buy a star although it does cost $25,000 to maintain the sidewalk star). Only 20 stars are given out each year.

One requirement is that the celebrity appear in person to receive their star (or a family member if the celebrity is deceased). However, a deceased star can't be nominated for 5 years.

In the event you wish to attend an unveiling ceremony, they usually take place at 11:30am during the week. Many also coincide with a major release by the honoree. Bring your camera. :)
