How do you know travelling light speed is impossible if you can't calculate how fast

we're already moving? I watched a discovery channel television program that stated travelling at the speed of light is impossible. But how can anyone really know this without first knowing how fast we are already moving. Even while you stand perfectly still you are actually moving because the earth is rotating around its axis, to add to that the earth is also travelling very fast in an orbit around the sun, and to add to that our whole solar system is travelling very rapidly around the milky way galaxy..... and so on, and so on, and so on. For that matter... how is any calculation of speed relevant if we don't have a firm anchor point to measure from?
