You can try to find more trackers in order to find more seeders and peers. I use btReAnnounce when I have torrents without many seeders and it can make a big difference. http://btreannouncer.net/
 
Hi i am downloading a torrent right now... and my download speed varies really greatly like for 2 minutes you see it at its peak at 172 kB/s and then 1 minute later it goes to 53. and then it goes down to like 21 kB/s at its lowest and then starts rising again? Whats the cause of these dramatic kB/s numbers?

The numbers of seeders and their upload speeds. That's the price you pay for using torrents...they are SLOW.
