How do you survive a so called killer heatwave?

Have to go into the city for a seminar on the day the "killer heatwave"hits Melbourne, so tomorrow on Saturday. Sounds almost scary but last weeks heat wave was almost unbearable. How do you survive walking 500meter to your car when it is 44 degrees? -:) Can you give me some "cool" ideas?
