How does a DVD drive know there is a disc inserted?

My xbox (samsung) DVD drive has suddenly stopped recognizing any disc when inserted. I am not getting dirty disc errors, but the drive is in a 'No Disc' state (according to evolutionX dashboard).

I am trying to work out a way to fix the drive, but not sure if there out of alignment. Any clues would be appreciated!
