How does an external DVD drive work?

I can't play sims 3 in a used computer because it doesn't have a DVD drive. If I buy an external DVD drive and hook it up to the computer could I play suns 3 through the external DVD drive?
 
yea... and I wouldn't call it an external... all your doing is buying an DVD drive and hooking it up to the computer so more like a secondary DVD drive.. but yes it SHOULD work!
