How does people balance shopping on a bike?

I don't have a basket or panier on my mountain bike. But Ive always wondered how do people balance shopping on a bike. I mean the basket is at the front so wouldn you tip over because its heavier at the front then the back of the bike? so how do you balance yourself without crashing ans falling over?
