How expensive are repairs/parts for a 1991 or 1993 VW Golf Mk1 Cabriolet, relative to other used cars in the same price range?
I had wanted an old, red convertible beetle for aages but have always heard about how much they break down/how problematic soft-tops are.
I then found this car which I think is super cute and much newer than the bug, so I figure it will be more reliable/safer/generally better... But I don't know anything at all about cars, and I've heard repairs can be very expensive (especially for the roof) or very inexpensive... just looking for some clarity!?
Help much appreciated,
Harriet

VW parts aren't as scary pricewise and people would have you believe. I've had several VW/Audis and the run of the mill stuff like brakes, exhausts etc are very reasonable. Where they can get pricey is gearboxes, differentials and carburettor parts but you can get these from breakers' yards or pattern replacements economically for the older vehicle. Fortunately they don't go wrong very often unless they are abused. Wouldn't like to comment on the ragtop cos I'm not a fan. Might be worth having a quick squirt round some parts websites to get a feel for roof parts prices.
