how important is lifting weights in basketball?

our coach tells us that we need to start lifting weights but idk what it really helps for a guard? will it help me handle the ball better or what?

Basketball requires more agility than strength, but your coach is right, it helps in defense. it makes you bigger and less "shovable".

There is a clear difference from basketball players who train and exercise on the side and the ones who don't.

Extremely important actually because what I usually do now is leg press very often which builds up my calf strength so i can jump higher and upper body for more distance and control of the ball.
