how long can android phones recieive android updates?

I want a smart phone. I was looking at the Samsung intercept as my next purchase. Its been out for a year and some months. Its on a android 2.3 platform. i heard after a while they dont get updates. i was wondering how long until i cant download an up to date droid platform.
